A Poppy to Remember

I thought that this year instead of posting the same Remembrance Day artwork that I would show you some of the poppy sketches I made in advance of the artwork. Trying to capture the different ways the poppy shows its petals, how the sun shines through and gives shadows, as well as the seedhead stage where shape and form continue in a different way.

My grandfather was wounded in WWI and died from those injuries a few years later, long before I was born. My mother had scant memories of her father as she was born not long after that war and was only 6 when he died. This is what war can take from us and whilst my parents very much wanted to forget the war as it brought too many bad memories, we need to remember enough in order not to repeat the mistakes of the past.
